A JAPANESE FUKUSA DEPICTING A PAIR OF OSHIDORI, MANDARIN DUCKS, EARLY MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912). Of square form made from green silk satin featuring oshidori with plum blossom and bamboo symbolic of an affectionate and harmonious married couple. The design worked in gold wrapped thread and coloured satin stitch. The corner tassels in the shape of ‘kame’ longevity turtles with a red damask silk backing. 50cm x 50cm. *A fukusa is a panel of silk used to cover a gift placed on a tray when gifts are exchanged between prominent families during important occasions such as weddings, New Year’s, and annual festivals.
