ONAGA TAMOTSU (JAPANESE, b.1932) – ‘Tai’, gold and silver lacquer, artist’s seal to the left, 23 x 32 cm, in original mount and frame with original cover and box, frame size: 42 x 51.5 cm
Tamotsu Onaga studied lacquer under Yamazaki Ritsuzan (1895-1969) and began exhibiting at a national level in 1951. Onaga has participated in numerous international exhibitions including the 1965 Berlin Fine Art Festival. In the same year he was honoured with a membership to the Gendai Kōgei Bijutsuka Kyōkai (Association of Contemporary Craft Artists). In 1966 he exhibited in Rome with the Nihon Gendai Kōgei Ten (Japan Contemporary Art Craft Exhibition) and again in London the following year.
