A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN PHOENIX DISH, MING DYNASTY, WANLI PERIOD (1573 – 1620). Swatow or ‘Zhangzhou’ porcelain coated in a thick, finely crackled glaze decorated in underglaze blue featuring a standing phoenix surrounded by foliage and blossoms which include peony and bamboo, auspicious symbols of peace, prosperity, wealth, love, affection, beauty and longevity. The underside is decorated with simple blue rings. 26.7cm diam.

This dish was recovered from an unnamed shipwreck by Captain Michael Hatcher of ‘Hatcher Cargo’ fame. Overall good condition with wear expected from age and time under sea. Traces of sea-growths still adhering to the surface in places and the glaze is a little stained. No signs of restoration or repair.
