A VIETNAMESE BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN DISH, HOI AN HOARD, 15TH CENTURY. Fairly heavily-potted decorated in underglaze blue with floral and lotus leaf patterns with a finely-crackled glaze. The rim unglazed and the base coated in a chocolate-coloured wash, typical of Vietnamese ware of this period.
This dish was part of the cargo of a 15th century shipwreck discovered in the 1990s that came to be known as the ‘Hoi An Hoard’. 23cm diam. Together a fascinating book, ‘Dragon Sea’ by Frank Pope who was the archaeological manager of the salvage operation. One faint 3.5cm vertical hairline from rim, otherwise in good condition with typical wear expected from shipwreck items. No signs of repair.
