A CHINESE PAINTED POTTERY COCOON JAR, HAN DYNASTY. Referred to as a ‘cocoon jar’ due to the bulbous shape of its body. Its original function was that of a grain storage jar. Made from a grey pottery, decorated by cold painting a variety of different coloured pigments in a design featuring cloud patterns within vertical bands. 26cm tall, 30.5cm length. Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 8).
For information: similar examples are shown in the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society book ‘Spirit of Han’.
Provenance: from a Sussex collection assembled during the 1990s. One minor shallow chip to foot rim. Expected surface wear from age. No signs of repair. Flaking to original pigment in areas but still nicely coloured.
