A PAIR OF LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE Chinese painted appliqué scenes, Qing dynasty. The first a scene of Baihu Jie Tang ‘White Tiger hall’ courtyard, depicting a military general overlooking figures in Peking masks, male and female figures with swords and staffs beside a horse and girl serving tea with three blocks of painted calligraphy. The second depicting a courtyard scene full of various military figures, performers and Daoist figures. The images are made by layering painted cut outs of paper and padded silk as well as adding other elements such as hair for beards. Hardwood frames and glazed. Total frame size approx. 132cm x 94cm.
