Large Japanese Woodblock Temple Print of Ebisu, Meiji Period. This very large and amusing print shows a mask of Ebisu, the god of fishermen, one of the seven gods of good luck, together with a fish. Behind the mask is a woven bamboo creel with the tail of another fish protruding. Although the print is signed we have been unable to read the signature but the large red seal is the temple seal of the Imamiya-Jinja, a Shinto Shrine located in Kita-ku, Kyoto. It was originally established for patrons to pray for safety from epidemic, though it has evolved into a shrine where patrons can pray for general good health. 49cm x 33cm (19.25 x 13 inches). Meiji period (1868 – 1912).
Provenance: From the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton. Small tears around the edge of the paper, some repaired. Minor creases and folds to corners.
