ANTIQUE PRINTED MAP ‘CHINA’ BY J. & C. WALKER, London 1843 – 1844. Attractive hand-colour. This interesting and detailed map of China was published in the atlas volume published as ‘Maps of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge London: Chapman and Hall, 186, Strand. The Society was one of many Victorian charitable institutions established to educate and inform a newly literate working class.
The map’s sub-title states ‘The Interior Chiefly From Du Halde And The Jesuits 1710 To 1718 And The Sea Coast From Modern Authorities’, indicative of the lack of advancing European knowledge over the previous one hundred but of the increasing naval activity in the area. 310 by 390mm (12 by 15.25 inches).
